FROM THE BOOK:
NATURAL LIGHT: "While fancy lighting set-ups can certainly provide great results, it would be a mistake to overlook the beautiful images that can be created with natural lighting alone. Remember, too, that a lot of lights can be intimidating, especially to people who are not used to being professionally photographed. Using available light can often make your model feel more at ease."
SHOOTING ON LOCATION: "When shooting on location, try to look at your setting with a creative eye. Even if you have previously decided on a series of poses, a good setting will often inspire you to envision new poses. Using uncommon and unexpected settings can often add an interesting dimension to an image. Pay special attention to natural light phenomena (such as light beams through the boards of an old barn). These can often be used to your advantage."
MODEL SELECTION: "Just as you may find one setting that just works really well for you, you will also probably find that some models suit your style better than others do. Physical appearance isn't the only thing that counts when looking for models. The personality, attitude, and energy a model brings to a shoot can be just as important to the quality of the final images as the equipment you bring. With one model you may have to spend a long time just to get one good image, with others you can reliably come home from a shoot with many great images. When I find a model with whom I get consistently good results, I try to use her a lot."
CLOTHING: "Different models will want different kinds of images. It's important for a photographer to keep the model's desires and comfort level in mind when preparing for a shoot. One way for you to gauge the situation is by going through your portfolio with the model before you photograph her. See what kind of images appeal to her, and evaluate which poses and settings would be the most flattering for her."
